Markforged designed the Onyx One from the ground up to 3D print carbon fibre. Carbon fibre is an abrasive material that wears down the traditional brass nozzles that 3D printers have very quickly. The Onyx One has wear-resistant stainless steel nozzles and industrial-grade components, to produce outstanding print results time after time.
The filament used by the Onyx One - Onyx - is part nylon and part chopped carbon fibre. It is 24 times stronger than ABS when printed and several times stronger than nylon. Parts printed with Onyx are also stiff with excellent thermal resistance, making them suitable for a wide range of engineering applications. However, Onyx parts also look great; they are a deep matte jet black, with a glorious finish that requires no post-processing. This means that Onyx can be used to create consumer-facing prototypes and products.
Having tested the Onyx One ourselves, we’ve got to say it is a great 3D printer. The resolution and the build size are ideal for engineering applications. But, the Onyx One is just at home 3D printing consumer-facing prototypes, since Onyx filament prints with a brilliant finish that requires no post-processing to look great.
